GARY COOPER and Jean Arthur in "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town" (1936)

Mr. Deeds Goes To Town (1936)

Gary Cooper   Jean Arthur

What a sweet movie! Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) lives in a small town, plays the tuba and writes poetry. One day three men come to his home town and inform him, his uncle passed away and left his fortune to Longfellow! Longfellow now has $20 million dollars! He doesn’t want the money. He doesn’t need it, but he agrees to go to New York with the three men. When he arrives in New York, he’s surrounded by people with nefarious purposes thinking they can swindle him out of his money because he’s an idiot. He meets Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur) not realizing she is a newspaper reporter, he becomes involved romantically with her. She’s using him to get sensational stories about him. It gets worse but everything comes together in the end. This is a Frank Capra film and there’s a lesson in this story.
